Professor Dennis Lo assumed office as Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 8 January 2025. Professor Lo is Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine of CUHK and President of Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. His research interests focus on the biology and diagnostic applications of cell-free nucleic acids in plasma. In particular, he discovered the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma in 1997 and has since then been pioneering non-invasive prenatal diagnosis using this technology. This technology has been adopted globally and has created a paradigm in prenatal medicine. He has also made many innovations using circulating nucleic acids for cancer detection, including the screening of early stage nasopharyngeal cancer.
In recognition of his research accomplishments, Professor Lo has won numerous awards, including 2014 King Faisal International Prize in Medicine, 2016 Future Science Prize in Life Science, 2019 Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award, 2021 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, 2021 Royal Medal, 2021 ESHG Mendel Award, 2022 ISPD Pioneer Award, 2022 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, 2023 inaugural Tengchong Science Prize and 2024 Jiménez Díaz Lecture Award. Professor Lo was also Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Founding Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Society and Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.
Professor MAO Junfa, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is currently President of Shenzhen University. Professor Mao obtained his PhD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and subsequently conducted postdoctoral researches at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of California, Berkeley. He previously served as Professor and Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and became President of Shenzhen University in February 2022. Professor Mao’s research focuses on high-speed circuit interconnection and radio frequency electronic packaging. He has received numerous honors, including the first and second prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Award, the second prize of the State Natural Science Award, and the second prize of the State Science and Technological Innovation Award. Professor Mao is also the Vice President of the Chinese Institute of Electronics and an IEEE Fellow.
Professor Chan Wai-yee is Li Ka Shing Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Director of the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of CUHK. Previously, Professor Chan served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. Professor Chan obtained his bachelor’s degree (Hon. 1st Class) in Chemistry from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and PhD from the University of Florida, USA. He is very active in the scientific community, and is the President of Hong Kong Institution of Science, a Member of Hospital Authority Board, Non-official Director of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Genome Institute, a Member of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong and a Member of the Council of the Shaw Prize Foundation. Professor Chan received numerous honours and awards and holds eleven patents.
Professor Ching is Professor of Electronic Engineering at CUHK and Director of Shun Hing Institute of Advanced Engineering. He was formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor / Vice-President of CUHK and Director of CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute. Professor Ching pursued his studies at the University of Liverpool, and received his BEng and PhD. He has devoted himself to research on adaptive digital signal processing, time delay estimation and target localization, blind signal estimation and separation, automatic speech recognition, speaker identification/verification and speech synthesis, and advanced signal processing techniques for wireless communications. He was Chairman of the Hong Kong Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and Council Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE). He holds fellowships from IEEE, IEE, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences.
Professor Gao is a professor at Peking University, Vice Director of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Member of the 10th, 11th and 12th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Board Chairman of China Computer Federation, Vice Editor-in-Chief of IEEE T-CSVT, IEEE T-AMD, Editor of JVCI, Member of IEEE Video Signal Processing and Communication Technology Committee, Member of IEEE Multimedia System and Application Technology Committee, Member of China National Committee for the Standardization of Information Technology, Member of Digital Audio-Visual Encoding Technology Standards Group. He has long been engaged in research on computer vision, pattern recognition and image processing, multimedia compression, multi-pattern interface and virtual reality. He is also an IEEE Fellow, Fellow of Association for Computing Machinery, and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Mr. Lam is an alumnus of CUHK, and Chairman of the Watches and Clocks Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Mr. Lam was formerly Chairman of the CUHK Convocation and is now Member of the CUHK Council. Since graduation from CUHK, Mr. Lam joined the watch and clock industry and has established the Time Industrial Manufactory Limited in 1993, which is a cross-border manufacturer with clients from all corners of the world.
Professor Li, Associate Vice President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, is also Director of the Research Administration Office. He graduated from Tianjin University with Doctor of Engineering. He started teaching at Shenzhen University in 1991, and he was a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 2002 to 2003. His overseas studying and working experiences include an English training program at Brunel University of the United Kingdom. Before joining CUHK-Shenzhen, he had been Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Shenzhen University, as well as Director of Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Sensor Technology, and Director of Shenzhen Optical Sensor Network Engineering Laboratory. As a professor of Physical Electronics, Prof. Li has long been engaged in the study of fiber optic sensors and nonlinear optics. He was honored as one among the first of Outstanding Scholars of Shenzhen University. He is a member of the editorial board of Sensors and Actuators and an analyst for Optics Letters and other journals. He is also a representative of the Municipal People's Congress and a member of the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology. He has published more than 100 papers in different well-known international journals, such as Optics Express, Applied Physics B, Applied Optics, and IEEE Sensors. He holds more than 20 authorized patents. As a project director, he has undertaken over 20 projects, including the National Science Fund of China, Guangdong Province Natural Science Fund Project, the Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of Ministry of Education, the Province-Ministry Industry-University-Institute Cooperation Project of Guangdong Province, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Project, the Shenzhen Nanshan District Science and Technology Project, the High-level Talents Project of Guangdong Province.
A Senior Counsel in Hong Kong, Dr. Neoh has been a Member of the Council of CUHK from 1994 to 2023 and served as Vice-Chairman of the Council from 1995 to 1997. Dr. Neoh was also the Treasurer of CUHK from 2017 to 2023 and Member of the Board of Directors of the CUHK Medical Centre from 2017 to 2025. He has contributed generously his time and professional expertise to guide the planning and administration of CUHK over the years. Dr. Neoh has been Chief Adviser to the China Securities Regulatory Commission since 1998. In the academic field, he has been Visiting Professor of many prestigious universities including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Zhongshan University. He is an Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and was conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by CUHK in 2003.
Professor Poon Wai-yin is currently Provost, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Wei Lun Professor of Statistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Professor Poon obtained her BSc in Mathematics in 1983 and MPhil in Statistics in 1985 from CUHK, and PhD in Biostatistics from University of California at Los Angeles in 1987. Professor Poon joined CUHK in 1987 as Lecturer in the Department of Statistics and was promoted to Professor in 2001. She has served as Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Science of CUHK in 2004-2014, Director of the Centre for Promoting Science Education of CUHK in 2006-2014, and Director of Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research (CLEAR) of CUHK in 2012-2015. She was appointed as Associate Vice-President in 2014 and Pro-Vice-Chancellor/ Vice President in 2015, taking charge of teaching and learning at University level.
Professor Song Chunshan is Dean of Science and Professor in the Department of Chemistry of CUHK. Prior to joining CUHK, he taught at Pennsylvania State University, USA. Professor Song obtained his bachelor’s degree from Dalian University of Technology and his master’s degree and PhD from Osaka University, Japan. Professor Song’s original and innovative research contributions to catalysis, adsorption, CO2 capture and conversion, and energy and clean fuels research have been widely recognised through many awards and honours. These include the George A. Olah Award and the Henry H. Storch Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Distinguished Researcher Award from ACS Energy & Fuels Division, the Faculty Scholar Medal from Pennsylvania State University, and being made a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar from the US-UK Fulbright Commission. He was also named an ACS Fellow.
Professor Tang is a professor at the School of Management of Harbin Institute of Technology, Adjunct Professor of Nankai University and Professor of Peking University HSBC Business School, Special Representative of Shenzhen Response to Climate Change, Member of the 3rd National Expert Committee on Response to Climate Change. Professor Tang obtained his PhD from Nankai University. He gave his service as Vice Director of Shenzhen People’s Congress and Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipality.
Mr. Tu is Board Chairperson of Hong Kong Haiya Group and Shenzhen Haiya Group. He served as Vice Chairperson of China Enterprise Confederation, Chairperson of Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organizations, Permanent Honorary Chairperson of Hong Kong and Shanwei Townsmen Association, Honorary Chairperson of Hong Kong Foreign Businessmen Association, Member of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Province Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Professor Xu is currently Vice President of Shenzhen University, and was formerly Deputy Dean of School of Science and Director of Registry Office of Shenzhen University. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Xidian University and PhD from Xi'an Jiaotong University. Professor Xu was appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics in 1999. Professor Xu's research interest include wavelet analysis, computational intelligence, digital image processing, complex network and modern logistics, and he has published 5 books and over 100 academic papers. Professor Xu has received numerous national and provincial awards in recognition of his research and teaching achievements, and has been awarded various competitive research grants funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High Technology Research and Development Programme of China (863 Programme) and the National Basic Research Programme (973 Programme), etc. Professor Xu is also dedicated to public services. He has taken up several advisory roles related to tertiary education development.
Professor Xu is the Founding President of CUHK-Shenzhen since August 2013. Professor Xu joined CUHK in 1997, and was formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor / Vice President of CUHK, and Professor of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering of CUHK. Professor Xu received his BEng and MEng degrees from Zhejiang University and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He actively participates in research on robotics and intelligent control engineering. Professor Xu is Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Fellow of International Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science, and Fellow of EU Academy of Sciences.
Professor Zhang Laiwu is currently a First-Grade Professor at Fudan University, serving as a PhD supervisor in the School of Management and the School of Information Science and Technology of Fudan University. Professor Zhang is also a Professor and PhD supervisor of Guanghua School of Management of Peking University, Chairman of the China Soft Science Research Society, and Chief Economist of the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation of the United Nations. He has previously held positions as Deputy Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology of China and Vice Chairman of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Government.
Since 2016, Professor Zhang, as a global pioneer in systematically elucidating the theory of the sixth industry, has served as the Founding Dean of Institute for Six-sector Economy at both Fudan University and Northwest A&F University, and has provided valuable contributions and guidance in terms of eco-agriculture and Big Health and healthcare for the elderly.
Mr. ZHANG Chunhua is a Member of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a Member of the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress, the Chairman of the Shenzhen Federation of Industry and Commerce, Executive Chairman of the Shenzhen University Alumni Association and the Chairman of China Brilliant Group (深圳市朗華投資控股有限公司, hereinafter “the CBG”). Mr. Zhang obtained master’s degrees from the Graduate School of Tsinghua University, Renmin Business School, and Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance. In 2024, he further participated in the New Era Entrepreneurs Development Program at Tsinghua University. Mr. Zhang previously served as President of the Alumni Association of the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen and President of the Alumni Association of Renmin Business School.
As a renowned entrepreneur in the field of production services in China, Mr. Zhang founded the CBG which is the first production service platform in China. Serving over 30,000 enterprise clients, the CBG empowers the manufacturing industry with high-end, full-chain, and intelligent digital solutions, driving cost reduction and efficiency enhancement across the sector. Mr. Zhang launched the first China-Europe freight train in Shenzhen and participated deeply in the Belt and Road Initiative. He also established the world's first industrial online bank, viz. Brillink Bank, and built the world's largest industrial electronics central warehouse and industrial consumables distribution center. Mr. Zhang has been honored with numerous awards, including recognition as an Outstanding Builders of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in Non-Public Sector, awards as an influential figure in China’s logistics industry, a pioneer of strategic emerging industries in the Great Bay Area and an expert in building Shenzhen as a pilot demonstration area. He has made significant contributions to the integrated innovation of manufacturing chains and supply chains and to promoting the high-quality development of foreign trade, manufacturing and modern services.
