Speaker Profile:
Professor Ambrose King Yeo-chi was born in Zhejiang, China, in 1935. He received his BA from National Taiwan University, his MA from National Chengchi University, and his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. He joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 1970, where he served as Chair Professor of Sociology, Head of New Asia College, and the University’s fifth Vice-Chancellor. Elected a Fellow of Academia Sinica in 1994, King has held visiting appointments at the University of Cambridge, MIT, the University of Wisconsin, and Heidelberg University, establishing a truly global academic footprint across Asia, Europe, and North America. Professor King is a renowned sociologist, educator, and celebrated essayist. Professor King’s writings cover diverse domains, including social thought, academia, and culture, and his major academic collections include The Quest for China's Modern Civilizational Order, From Tradition to Modernity, The Idea of a University, The Modern Turn of China, A History of People-Based Thought in China, Chinese Society and Culture, Chinese Politics and Culture, and Sociology and China Studies. His trilogy of essays, including Cambridge Musings, Heidelberg Musings and Dunhuang Musings, has made him known as a master of contemporary prose.
