The Chorus
The Chorus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Chorus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was formerly the CUHK-Shenzhen Student Chorus (established in 2014) and the CUHK-Shenzhen Staff Chorus (established in ?2015). In 2019, the two choruses were officially merged into a university-level chorus. Since its establishment, adhering to the concept of innovation and diversification, it has participayed in nearly 40 concerts and large-scale performances at home and abroad, rehearsed a large number of classic chorus repertories, and collaborated with numerous outstanding musicians and musical groups such as DAI Yuqiang, Warren MOK, WEI Song, GAO Song, WU Bixia, Anson PING, LIU Yan, Rose LIU, Tiago NACARATO, Eliseu SILVA, the Hong Kong Strings, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, the Guangdong Chinese Orchestra, and more.
In addition, to disseminating traditional Chinese culture, the chorus has continuously explored and created paths for aesthetic education. In May 2024, the Chorus collaborated with the CUHK-Shenzhen Affiliated Schools in a chorus concert, deepening artistic exchanges and mutual learning, integrating resources to carry out aesthetic education, and promoting high-quality development in aesthetic education. In the future, the Chorus will continue to make its contributions. Also, the Chorus keeps aiming at being in line with international music standards. In July 2024, the Chorus was invited to the CONVIMUS International Music Festival in Porto, to perform in collaboration with the renowned Portuguese folk singer Tiago NACARATO and the Portuguese Orquestra Sinfónica Amasing Orchestra. This brought Chinese to the international stage while learning about world music to enhance musical accomplishment.
Moreover, the Chorus has achieved remarkable results in various artistic competitions. In 2023, it won the first prize in the Non-professional Choral Vocal Music Category of the Third Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area University Students Art Festival, the first prize in the Vocal Category (Group A) in the Guangdong Province the 7th Edition College Student Art Exhibition Activities, and the second prize in the Art Performance Category (Group A) in the 7th National University Students Art Exhibition and Performance Activity. Additionally, it was invited to participate in the recording of Youku's "E-POP UNITY" programme, and cooperated ?the song Nameless with music producer and singer Hamshor Tang.
After nearly nine years of development, the Chorus is capable of interpreting different musical styles with wide influence. It is committed to adding a rich artistic atmosphere to the campus, further promoting the development of aesthetic education with distinctive features, and holding multiple chorus concerts to bring the beauty of music and the unique harmonious sound of chorus to all corners of the campus. Meanwhile, it has participated in numerous off-campus performances, with its footprint spanning the Hong Kong City Hall, Hong Kong Youth Square, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Shenzhen Poly Theatre, Shenzhen Grand Theatre, Chengdu City Concert Hall, Longgang Cultural Centre, Guangming Culture & Arts Center, Sea World Culture & Arts center Mountain View Theater, and more. In the future, the Chorus will continue to write a new chapter with its singing and passion for music.

The Orchestra and?The Chamber Group
The Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in 2015 and officially became a university-level orchestra in 2019. The orchestra has collaborated with numerous renowned musicians from both China and abroad, including Zhao Cong, Dai Yuqiang, Warren Mok, Wei Song, Gao Song, Chai Haofu, Tiago Nacarato, and Eliseu Silva. Since 2021, the orchestra and chamber music rehearsals and performances have been led by Hong Kong conductor and pianist Cho Ki Jacky WONG.
In November 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra launched the University-Group Cooperation Project, which includes the cooperation in courses and performances. In July 2021, the Orchestra was invited to participate in the filming of the promotional video of The Readers II by China Central Television at Pingshan Grand Theatre. In 2022 and 2023, the orchestra received authorization from Tencent to perform music from the game "Honor of Kings" and collaborated with renowned pipa player Zhao Cong, the director of the China National Traditional Orchestra, in a virtual performance of "Crimson Tassel" at Shenzhen Concert Hall, presenting an exhilarating artistic feast.
In 2024, the orchestra was invited to the Convimus International Music Festival in Portugal, traveling to Porto to perform jointly with the local Orquestra Sinfónica AMAZING to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal and the 25th anniversary of the return of Macao. During the opening concert of the Convimus International Music Festival, the orchestra also engaged in a cross-genre collaboration with renowned Portuguese folk singer Tiago Nacarato, interpreting a new fusion of diverse rhythms.
The orchestra is dedicated to promoting the development of classical music on campus, presenting symphony concerts for faculty and students through the "Sunset Concert" series. It also promotes and popularizes classical and modern musical works among local residents, participating in numerous choral concerts at venues such as Shenzhen Poly Theatre, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Longgang Cultural Centre, and the Aquatic Stage at the Universiade Sports Center. Furthermore, the orchestra highly values exchanges and cooperation with musical talents. Through various collaborative projects, it has established connections with renowned musicians from both China and abroad, jointly exploring the infinite possibilities of music and promoting the integration of musical arts from different cultural backgrounds.
The CUHK-Shenzhen Chamber Group
The CUHK-Shenzhen Chamber Group was originally formed as a student interest group under the CUHK-Shenzhen Orchestra in 2016 and officially established in 2021. It is a vibrant and creative ensemble made up of talented instrumentalists from the university with a shared passion for music. Dedicated to pushing boundaries of music, the group explores a wide range of chamber music, including saxophone quartets, woodwind and brass ensembles, classical guitar, accordion, along with traditional string quartets. Today, CUHK-Shenzhen Chamber Group has grown into one of the most recognized university-level ensembles, offering diverse and enriching musical experiences for the music enthusiasts.?
CUHK-Shenzhen Chamber Group was mentored by prominent musicians from Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, such as Associate Principal Cheng Xianwei, Principal Cellist Wu Zhen, and Lesya Kot, Principal of the Second Violin Section. The group’s repertoire spans from classical masterpieces like Mozart’sPiano Concerto No. 21 and Serenade in G Major, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, to modern pieces, such as Joe Hisaishi’s Castle in the Sky and Summer(from Kikujiro).
In 2023, the group premiered a series of works specially composed by young composer Zhang Tianyang, including a saxophone quartet and jazz drum version of Fly Me to the Moon at Shenzhen Concert Hall. In May 2023, it performed the "Voices of Chamber Music" Principal Quintet Concert at the Bay Opera of Shenzhen, showcasing works of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, conducted by conductor and pianist Jacky Wong.
CUHK-Shenzhen Chamber Group is more than a students’ art group, but a testament to CUHK-Shenzhen’s whole-person education philosophy. It nurtures members’ musical aesthetic and provides a platform to showcase their talents. Through its ongoing dedication to music, the group will continue to offer unforgettable experiences and personal growth for its members.

The Chinese Orchestra
The Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Chinese Orchestra of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was established in August 2018. It gathers over 30 Chinese music lovers in the University and becomes fully orchestrated with string, plucked, woodwind, and percussion sections, participating in numerous activities both on and off campus.
/Music Performance and Promotion/ To continuously popularize, disseminate, and spread the national music, the Chinese Orchestra inherits classical Chinese music and fosters the innovative development of Chinese traditional culture. They showcase cultural confidence and have staged many works in various styles, including Rising Higher Step by Step, Dance of the Yao People, The Legend of the Condor Heroes, Dance of Picking Tea, Drought Thunder, Rambling around the Flower Stream, Blue and White Porcelain, Fade Away, Youthful Longing, Colorful Caves, To Youth, A Dream of Red Mansions, etc. These songs bring audience the unique expressiveness of different Chinese instruments and boundless charm of Chinese music. Among them, the folk chamber music version of Rambling around the Flower Stream was premiered at CUHK-Shenzhen 2021 Concert. The Chinese Orchestra showed its enthusiastic spirit and exceptional skills, receiving unanimous praise.
/Deep Cooperation Across Multiple Platforms/ In 2024, the Chinese Orchestra has held “Melodies in the Joyful Spring - Special Concert”, which was the first off-campus public charity performance by them In the concert, they coopertated with Macao Chinese Orchestra, Shenzhen Yulong School, and the Chinese Orchestra of Shenzhen Yantian Foreign Language Primary School. The Chinese Orchestra has also held 2022 CUHK-Shenzhen Chinese Orchestra Concert of Chinese Music, participated in the Annual Concert of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen held in Shenzhen Concert Hall many times. It has also participated in performances at the 2021 CUHK-Shenzhen “Music in the Cloud” Concert, bringing diverse Chinese music performances to the public.
In future artistic practices, the Chinese Orchestra will continue to enhance members’ musical literacy and performance skills, broaden their horizons, and accumulate experience, enriching campus culture and artistic atmosphere. They aim to promote Chinese music continuously, allowing more people to experience its unique charm.

The A Cappella Group
The A Cappella Group of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The A Cappella Group of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was officially established in 2022, initiated and guided by Miss Miette He, the head of the Art Groups of the University Arts Centre. Its members are students from the university who have a passion for unaccompanied vocal group singing. They interpret the unique charm of music through the human voice, and challenge the possibilities of music.
With the concept of openmind, innovation and inclusion, it has participated in nearly twenty performances in Shenzhen, Fuzhou, and other locations, interpreting a variety of a cappella pieces from both domestic and international repertoires. On campus, it also held the “Seasons of Love” A Cappella Concert and the “For Love · For Graduation” A Cappella Music Party. Songs performed included Stars, We Are Young, Misbehavin, and the MV Youth, The Light Chaser, and I Just Called to Say I Love You. These have brought the audience with the sincerest emotions and the most beautiful singing.
In addition, the A Cappella Group actively engages in social service activities, bringing warmth and care to more communities through the power of music. In November 2022, the A Cappella Group participated in the Sing Together, co-hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism, and Sports, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong, and the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao. Through singing, they highlighted the charm of harmony and integration, promoting cultural development in the Greater Bay Area. In April 2023, they participated in a modern music concert organized by the Longgang District Cultural Center to benefit the public. In May 2023, they performed the piece Finding Myself during the Shenzhen Green University Graduation Season series. In December 2023, they participated in the first Pingshan Twelve Hours of Cultural Collection, promoting outstanding traditional Chinese culture.
In October 2024, the A Cappella Group was invited to participate in the China Pingtan Island Chorus Festival, where they exchanged ideas and learned with A Cappella Groups from other universities. They performed the song Can’t Sleep Love and a newly rewritten song Black Sheep and showcased the purity and diversity of music.
The A Cappella Group will continue to improve and develop in the future, creating more works in diverse styles. It will maintain friendly cooperative relationships with vocal groups from various universities and professional groups, continuously attempting to break barriers and jointly promote the A Cappella art form, so that more people can understand the infinite possibilities contained in the human
